Drawing on the Future: Mentorship in Animation
Just saw this article on AWN....this looks like an excellent lecture. Get your tickets now because I'm SURE this one will sell out!
From AWN (this is the link to the original article):
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present the 12th Marc Davis Celebration of Animation, "Drawing on the Future: Mentorship in Animation," on Friday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
The evening will feature an onstage panel discussion moderated by animation critic Charles Solomon. Honored guests James Baxter, Andreas Deja, Pete Docter and Eric Goldberg will spotlight the mentors who fostered their professional development as well as provide insights into their individual approaches to their art. The celebration will include clips from the masters' work that inspired each of the panelists, and from the panelists' work reflecting that inspiration.
Tickets for the Academy's 12th Marc Davis Celebration of Animation are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. They may be purchased online at www.oscars.org, in person at the Academy box office or by mail. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. All seating is unreserved. Happy New Year!
I hope everybody had a great holiday! Just to update everyone- due to some scheduling conflicts I had last year, I have moved pitch night from it's normal time (every third Thursday of the month) to now being the LAST Thursday of every month.
January's meeting will fall on Jan. 31st. Other info TBA in the coming week. Hope to see y'all there for our FIRST meeting of '08!!
In the meantime, check out this great panel that the Visual Effects Society has put together regarding the "Future of Character Animation." All info is below- this looks like an event not to be missed!
-----------------------------------
The Future of Character Animation:
What Do New Technologies Mean To Artists?
This panel is designed to address the changes that advances in animation technologies are making to how animation is produced and what that means to animation artists. Performance capture techniques are here to stay, but it has also been repeatedly shown that more traditional means of bringing characters to life still have a major role to play in animation production.
What does all of this mean to the artists, performers, actors and technologists who must work together? How do studios, directors, producers, and supervisors decide which techniques will bring their vision to the screen? It is our hope that this panel will creatively enlighten us with discussions of real solutions and guidelines for the individuals who do and love animation.
Moderator:
Frank Gladstone, Gladstone Film, Inc.
Panelists (Schedule Permitting):
Ken Duncan, Duncan Studio (3D Key Frame Animation)
Don Hahn, Disney (2D Hand Drawn Animation)
Steve Chiodo, Chiodo Brothers (Stop Motion Animation)

Hurry! Sign up today for "So You Wanna Make a Short?"
Short films used to be the red-headed stepchild of the animation business. Everybody had a story they wanted to tell (that Christmas elf tale you came up with in the Eighties, for instance), but there was no market for them and no funding to make them, so ideas languished in desk drawers all over town.
That was five minutes ago. Suddenly, shorts are hot. Shorts have EXPLODED onto the Internet and television. Did you know that Disney has aired 17 brand new five-minute shorts since last fall, mostly from creators outside of its own studio?! So how do you get a piece of this action? How can I get my Christmas elf on the air?
What you need to do is come to WIA/LA's next General Meeting: "So You Wanna Make A Short?" We've gathered a terrific panel to discuss the artistic and pragmatic issues of short film creation:
Nick Conafalone, Development Coordinator, Walt Disney Studios shorts program
Peter Gal, Vice President of Animation Development, Nickelodeon
Eric Homan, Frederator Studios
Rusty Mills, MyToons
Moderated by Sarah Baisley.
If you've ever wanted to create something that's ALL YOURS, don't miss out.
Join us at Dreamworks (1000 Flower Street, Glendale, California) on Friday, October 26th, 2007. Schmoozing and networking begins at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting proper starts at 7:00. Food and soft drinks should be available.
To RSVP, please call the Hotline at (310) 535-3838 or email LAchapterrsvps@aol.com before Wednesday, October 24th.
Non-members are asked for a $10.00 donation: members are free. We look forward to seeing you!
